SIERRA VISTA HERALD EDITORIAL BOARD – Never missing a vote; saving the A-10 from extinction; earning key committee appointments; and standing up for all women, but female veterans in particular.

Not bad for a first-term member of Congress.

Martha McSally has earned our endorsement for re-election to represent Arizona District 2 in the United States Congress as a member of the House of Representatives. She has truly dedicated her best efforts to serving this district since succeeding the popular and effective Ron Barber by the narrowest of margins in the 2014 election.

She has truly dedicated her best efforts to serving this district since succeeding the popular and effective Ron Barber by the narrowest of margins in the 2014 election.

That seems so long ago. Highlights during her two years in Congress have included stopping the Air Force effort to replace the Tucson-based A-10 with the still unfinished F-35.

She has parlayed her military background and political expertise to earn the attention of fellow members of Congress and merit appointments to several key committees affecting policy issues in southeast Arizona. That list includes the Homeland Security Committee, overseeing the operations of the Border Patrol and Customs; and the House Armed Services Committee, which oversees the Department of Defense and thereby Fort Huachuca and Davis-Monthan AFB.

Earlier this year her sponsorship of the Women Airforce Service Pilots Arlington Inurnment Restoration Act, signed into law by President Obama, demonstrated her mastery of the legislative process and her commitment to do what’s right for all women, especially those in uniform. The measure restores the eligibility of female World War II pilots at Arlington National Cemetery and represents her second bill signed into law. Finally, her record of perfect attendance in Congress is a clear demonstration of her commitment to serve the district.

Finally, her record of perfect attendance in Congress is a clear demonstration of her commitment to serve the district.

She has plenty left to do in her second term and constituent expectations will continue to be high. Cochise County is in desperate need of economic development, which might be spurred by progress on a new Port of Entry in Douglas. We agree with her assessment that the readiness of the U.S. military is poor and endorse her efforts to promote installations in southeast Arizona as part of a solution to that problem. Her nuanced awareness of the need for better security in rural Cochise County and her recent prodding of the Border Patrol on its strategy to stop smuggling in the region are key issues for her next term.

Martha McSally represents the best characteristics of the Republican Party and has earned your vote on Nov. 8.
